Welcome to HIT—How I Teach….In HIT#8, I present two spelling practice tools that you can re-create for your students (or get one for free here!). I teach how I use my signature Spelling Notebook classify and categorize spelling words with similar phonetic components, word families, and structural analysis rules. Then I teach how to use my free tool, The Six S Spelling Secret Packet, to practice challenging words each week before a spelling test.

First up, The Spelling Notebook. (Be sure to get your free Teacher’s Notebook Episode Sheets, so you will have the entire SN Table of Contents to create your own SN and so that you will see several sample pages to view the categorizing system!) I teach the importance of helping students categorize their spelling words according to spelling commonalities. (You are teaching spelling according to spelling commonalities, not topics, right? 😊 ) Then I show specific pages and how a spelling notebook approach can grow with your student as he grows in spelling! (This works whether you use mine or create your own!)

I then move into my freebie, The Six S Spelling Secret Packet! (You can get it for free at language arts lady blog or at my TPT store!) This packet contains three main strategies that you can use with or without my freebie:

1) Writing similar/rhyming spelling words together with syllabication
2) Writing spelling words on small or medium graph paper squares
3) Using the Six S Spelling Secret approach:

a. See
b. Say
c. Separate
d. Spell
e. Spot
f. Stop/Start

It’s all here in this week’s HIT—where each week, I bring you tips, tricks, and techniques for teaching writing, language arts, grammar, and more (to grades two through twelve) drawing upon my 100+ curriculum books totaling over 50,000 pages.

But wait…there’s more! Not only do I teach parents, teachers, and homeschoolers the hundreds of teaching tools I have developed over the past twenty years, listeners/viewers also get a weekly downloadable booklet, Teacher’s Notebook (TN) that has actual lesson sheets that you can print off and use with your students to teach the very topic that I just taught you!

And for your convenience, How I Teach…. is available as a podcast (follow along in your TN sheets for that week) and a YouTube video (with Power Point containing the same as the TN)!

Note: This lesson came from The Spelling Notebook, a 100-page downloadable book for categorizing spelling words for study and practice and The Six S Spelling Secret Packet .
